Libya Rebel Envoys Meet Jumblat, Vow to Follow Up Sadr Case

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat held talks Wednesday at his Clemenceau residence with a delegation from Libya’s rebel National Transitional Council, in the presence of ministers Ghazi Aridi and Wael Abu Faour and the PSP’s deputy chief for foreign affairs Dureid Yaghi.

Delegation member Abdullah al-Zaidani handed Jumblat an invitation to visit Libya and a letter of gratitude from National Transitional Council chief Mustafa Abdul Jalil.

China Asks U.N. to Lead Post-War Efforts in Libya

China has asked the United Nations to lead post-war reconstruction in Libya, urging a smooth political transition in the North African state after rebels overran Moammar Gadhafi's Tripoli compound.

Beijing also said it was willing to help with efforts to return stability to Libya as the rebels battled the last remnants of Gadhafi's forces.

Battles in Tripoli as Rebels Offer $1.7 Mln for Gadhafi's Head

Libyan rebels put a price of two million dinars ($1.67 million, 1.2 million euros) on the head of strongman Moammar Gadhafi, dead or alive, the head of the National Transitional Council said on Wednesday, as battles rocked the capital Tripoli.

"The NTC supports the initiative of businessmen who are offering two million dinars for the capture of Moammar Gadhafi, dead or alive," Mustafa Abdul Jalil said in Tripoli.

Britain and France said Wednesday they were seeking a new United Nations resolution to unlock frozen Libyan assets in a bid to deliver urgently needed funds to the rebels.

Trapped Journalists Freed from Tripoli Hotel

Some 30 mostly foreign journalists who had been held against their will in Tripoli's Rixos Hotel by guards loyal to Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi were freed on Wednesday.

The journalists, who were growing short of food and water after being confined to the hotel since Sunday, left there around 1 pm (1500 GMT), they reported.

Russia Considers to Establish Ties with Libya Rebels but Urges Talks

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said there were still two powers in Libya despite the success of rebels against the forces of Moammar Gadhafi, and called for talks to resolve the situation.

Chavez Proclaims Solidarity with Besieged Gadhafi

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez declared Tuesday that he will continue to recognize only Moammar Gadhafi as the legitimate leader of Libya, despite signs the regime is likely in its last throes.

In Libya, Chavez said, there is "only one government, the one led by Moammar Gadhafi," the Venezuelan leader said, restating earlier criticism of the NATO bombardment that contributed to the collapse of the Libyan strongman's regime.

Seif al-Islam: Gadhafi and Family Still in Tripoli

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and his family are still in Tripoli, where his troops were engaged in fierce fighting with rebels outside his compound on Tuesday, his son Seif al-Islam said.

Govt. Recognizes Libya Rebel Council, Tasks FM with Following Up Sadr Case

Lebanon on Tuesday recognized Libya’s rebel National Transitional Council, which has almost taken full control of Libya and ended the 42-year reign of strongman Moammar Gadhafi, acting information minister Wael Abu Faour said after a cabinet meeting.

Briefing reporters after cabinet’s session in Beiteddine, Abu Faour said the government also decided to task Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour with discussing the case of the disappearance of Imam Moussa Sadr and his companions with the leaders of Libya’s new government.
