Israel is planning to significantly expand its ground operation in Lebanon, aiming to seize the entire area south of the Litani River and dismantle Hezbollah's military infrastructure, Israeli and U.S. officials told U.S. news portal Axios.

Israeli shells hit a United Nations peacekeeping base in southern Lebanon on Friday, state media reported, as Israel and Hezbollah fought their latest war.

The man accused of ramming his pickup truck into a synagogue and setting it ablaze in a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, died from a "self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head," an FBI official told reporters Friday.

The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, was originally born in Lebanon, and media reports indicate his relatives were killed in Israeli strikes there days ago.

An Israeli strike hit an apartment building in the northern Beirut suburb of Nabaa that had been targeted a day earlier, Lebanese state media said on Saturday, also reporting strikes in the country's south.

French President Emmanuel Macron on Saturday said Lebanon was ready to engage in "direct talks" with Israel and offered to host negotiations in Paris.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has assigned former Minister Ron Dermer the responsibility of handling the Lebanese file during war, U.S. news portal Axios reported on Friday.

Hezbollah leader Sheikh Naim Qassem said on Friday his group was ready for a long confrontation with Israel, as the two sides fought another war in Lebanon which he considered "existential."

The strikes on roads and bridges come as Israel's military says it is sending more forces to the front along the border with Lebanon.

Prime Minister Nawaf Salam warned Friday that Lebanon is "facing one of the most dangerous chapters in its modern history."

"The truth is, this is a conflict they (Lebanese people) did not choose and did not want. In the past few weeks, as hostilities intensified, more than 900,000 people—nearly one in five residents—have been forced to flee their homes and seek refuge across Lebanese territory," said Salam in a speech at the Grand Serail during the launch of the "2026 Emergency Humanitarian Appeal for Lebanon," in the presence of U.N. chief Antonio Guterres, U.N. officials and foreign ambassadors.

The Israeli military said on Friday it had carried out around 7,600 strikes in Iran and 1,100 in Lebanon since launching its joint operation with the United States against Tehran.

In Lebanon, it said it had struck 200 "missile and launcher targets" and around 35 command-and-control sites of the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, and killed "more than 380 Hezbollah terrorists".
