An Israeli airstrike on the southern Lebanese port city of Tyre left at least seven people dead, among them five siblings, three of whom were deaf and mute, officials and a resident said Saturday. Elsewhere in Lebanon, Israeli airstrikes killed 31 people.

The rise in Tyre's death toll came as Israel's air force carried out airstrikes on different parts of southern and eastern Lebanon on Saturday hours after Beirut's southern suburbs were pounded by jets, destroying several buildings, state media reported.

U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has discussed Lebanon and Gaza in his first call with his new Israeli counterpart Israel Katz, the Pentagon said.

Rescuers did not expect to find two-year-old Ali Khalifeh alive after an Israeli strike on southern Lebanon killed his entire family and left him trapped under the rubble for 14 hours.

Israeli air strikes hit Beirut's southern suburbs overnight Friday shortly after Israel's military warned residents to leave parts of the area.

An air raid hit near the Lebanese University in Hadath and another on the Burj al-Barajneh suburb.

Three people were killed and over 30 injured in several Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon's southern port city of Tyre, the health ministry said.

The ministry said that this toll is preliminary, as rescue workers were searching for people trapped under rubble.

UNIFIL has accused the Israeli army of deliberately attacking its positions and of recently destroying part of a fence and a concrete structure in a UNIFIL position in Ras Naqoura.

"Yesterday, two IDF excavators and one IDF bulldozer destroyed part of a fence and a concrete structure in a UNIFIL position in Ras Naqoura. In response to our urgent protest, the IDF denied any activity was taking place inside the UNIFIL position," UNIFIL said in a statement.

Lebanese state media said the Israeli army on Friday detonated explosives planted inside houses in three border villages that have been battered by the Israel-Hezbollah war.

"Since this morning, the Israeli enemy's army has been carrying out bombing operations inside the villages of Yaroun, Aitaroun and Maroun al-Ras in the Bint Jbeil area, with the aim of destroying residential homes there," the official National News Agency said, the latest in a string of similar incidents that have impacted the flashpoint border area.
