Syrian Refugees in Jordan Riot over Tents

Jordanian riot police fired tear gas on Sunday to disperse Syrian refugees at a northern desert camp as they fought over tents being distributed by a Norwegian charity, an official said.

"A Norwegian charity was giving away tents to Syrian refugees at the Zaatari camp. They rioted and clashed with each other, trying to attack security officers," Anmar Hmud, a government spokesman for refugee affairs, told AFP.

Exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshaal said on Monday the world "must respect" Palestinian reconciliation talks, after meeting King Abdullah II in Jordan, a palace statement said.

"I am optimistic about the Palestinian reconciliation. The international community must respect Palestinian need to end division," Meshaal was quoted as saying after meeting the king in Amman.

Loyalists Sweep to Power in Jordan Poll Results

The final results on Monday for Jordan's general election held last week saw tribal leaders, pro-regime loyalists and independent businessmen sweep to power after a boycott by the Muslim Brotherhood.

Britain Pledges £21 Million in Aid to Syria

Britain on Saturday pledged an extra £21 million ($33 million, 25 million euros) of humanitarian aid to help civilians caught up in the Syrian conflict.

Jordan Post-Election Protests Injure Four

Protests in Jordan against the results of a general election turned violent on Friday injuring four people, and forced police to fire tear gas to disperse demonstrators, an official said.

"Rioting that also saw attacks on houses and public property" wounded four people in the northern province of Irbid, its governor Khaled Abu Zayd told Petra news agency, adding that police intervened successfully breaking up the violence.

UNHCR: 6,400 Syrians Arrive at Jordan Camp in 24 Hours

More than 6,400 Syrian refugees have fled to Jordan's Zaatari camp in the past 24 hours, bringing to over 30,000 the number of arrivals since the start of the month, the U.N. refugee agency said.

"Jordan has experienced a record number of refugees crossing," UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told reporters in Geneva, noting that December's influx totaled 16,413.
