"Outlaws" threw petrol bombs at government buildings in the restive southern city of Maan Friday, where unrest this week has killed one man and wounded five policemen, a security source said.

The violence first erupted Sunday night when gunmen opened fire at police guarding a courthouse in Maan, seriously wounding one of them.

Controversial amendments to Jordan's anti-terrorism law seek to curb the influence of homegrown al-Qaida affiliated jihadists fighting the regime of the kingdom's northern neighbor Syria, analysts said.

New articles added to the law approved by MPs on Tuesday deem "joining or attempting to join armed or terrorist groups, or recruiting or attempting to recruit people to join these groups" acts of terrorism.

An Arab Israeli journalist has been arrested after making a visit to Lebanon, his mother said Thursday, on suspicion he could have joined a "hostile organization."

Majd Kayyal, 23, from the northern coastal city of Haifa, crossed into Jordan on March 23 and traveled on to Lebanon for a conference organized by As-Safir newspaper, Israel's Shin Bet domestic security agency said.

A Jordanian air force plane on a training flight crash landed on Thursday, killing the pilot, the army said.

"At around 8:00 am (0500 GMT), a group of F-5 jet fighters were on a training flight when one of them crashed after it hit the ground in eastern Jordan," the army said on its website.

Jordan on Wednesday urged the U.N. Security Council to end Israeli "escalation" at Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound after it was opened to Jewish visitors.

"Legal, humanitarian and ethical duties of the U.N. Security Council and the international community require that they stop Israeli escalation and violations committed by Jewish radicals at Al-Aqsa," Information Minister Mohammad Momani told the state-run Petra news agency.

Syrian refugees in urban areas of Jordan are struggling to cope with inadequate housing, high debts, rising costs and educational challenges for their children, a global relief agency said Wednesday.

CARE International said a household assessment of more than 2,200 Syrian refugees showed 90 percent of them were living in debt to relatives, landlords, shopkeepers and neighbors.

Jordanian warplanes destroyed "camouflaged" vehicles on Wednesday as they tried to cross into the kingdom from war-ravaged Syria, in the first such strikes since the conflict erupted three years ago.

A Syrian military source, cited by state television in Damascus, said the vehicles struck did not belong to Syria's armed forces, while Amman said an initial probe showed they were being used by arms dealers.

A Jordanian man who threw his shoes at Prime Minister Abdullah Nsur and five cabinet ministers in the northern city of Jerash, was freed Tuesday, his family said.

"The mayor of Jerash today freed Mefleh Mahasneh... Nsur did not press charges," one relative told AFP.
