Jordan shot down a drone on Friday as it flew over the northeastern region of Mafraq, near the border with Syria, a security official said.

In the first such incident since the conflict erupted in neighboring Syria in 2011, "the Jordanian armed forces shot down an unidentified drone with a missile as it flew over Mafraq," the official told AFP.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said Thursday he hopes a ceasefire can be agreed in Gaza as the Palestinian death toll on day 17 of an Israeli offensive topped 788 people.

"So far, there is hope for a ceasefire," Abbas said after meeting Jordan's King Abdullah II in Amman, a palace statement said.

Iraq exported 2.42 million barrels of oil per day in June, the month of a jihadist offensive, the oil ministry said, falling far short of a budgeted projection of 3.4 million bpd.

Ministry spokesman Assem Jihad said June exports generated revenue of $7.47 billion, or $600 million less than in May, despite higher oil prices.

National carrier Royal Jordanian said on Wednesday it has suspended flights to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion international airport after a Gaza rocket struck near runways.

The announcement by the airline, which operates 20 weekly flights to Tel Aviv, was made in a short statement carried by state-run Petra news agency.

The lower house of Jordan's parliament Tuesday condemned Israel's "brutal and racist aggression" on Gaza, describing the death of more than 590 Palestinians as "the most atrocious mass killing operation."

"Palestinians in Gaza are facing the the atrocious mass killing operation by the brutal racist Israeli occupation, which is violating international laws," the 150-member lower house said in a statement.

Baghdad on Tuesday said Jordan's hosting of a meeting of Sunni Iraqis opposed to the Shiite-led government was "unacceptable".

On Friday Iraq recalled its envoy to Amman without giving a reason, but the move came days after a meeting of some 300 Sunni clerics, tribal leaders, insurgent commanders and businessmen in the Jordanian capital.

Baghdad on Friday said it had recalled its ambassador to Jordan, two days after Sunni Iraqi leaders meeting in Amman described a jihadist-led insurgency sweeping parts of Iraq as a "popular revolt."

"Iraq decides to withdraw its ambassador from the Jordanian capital Amman for consultations," the foreign ministry said in a statement on its website, without giving a reason for the move.

Radical cleric Abu Qatada, who is being tried on terror charges in Jordan, on Tuesday denounced as "void" the declaration of a caliphate by Sunni jihadists in Iraq and Syria.

"The announcement of a caliphate by the Islamic State (IS) is void and meaningless because it was not approved by jihadists in other parts of the world," Abu Qatada wrote in a 21-page document published on jihadist websites.

Jordan's King Abdullah II on Monday urged Israel to stop targeting civilians in its deadly offensive against the Gaza Strip, speaking in a telephone call with U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.

"The king and Ban discussed developments in the Gaza Strip and the monarch warned against their repercussions for the entire region and its stability," the palace said in a statement.

A Syrian rebel commander was shot dead in Amman in an apparent revenge killing by family members, Jordanian police said Sunday as the opposition blamed the Damascus regime for his death.

Maher Rahhal, who headed the Liwa al-Mujahideen Brigade, one of the groups fighting to topple Syrian President Bashar Assad, "was shot twice in Abu Nseir district" late Friday, a security official said.
