Germany's Merkel to Visit Ukraine on August 23

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Ukraine Saturday amid international tensions over fighting in the east of the country, Ukraine's foreign minister Pavlo Klimkin said.

"The visit is planned for the day before Ukraine's national holiday" on August 24, Klimkin told journalists, adding that the visit by the German leader would be "very interesting".

Germany against Iraq's Kurds Forming Independent State

Germany is opposed to the formation of an independent state by Iraq's Kurds, who are currently battling Islamic State jihadists with Western help, Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Sunday.

"An independent Kurdish state would further destabilize the region and trigger new tensions, maybe with the neighboring Iraqi state as well," he told the Bild newspaper in an interview.

Report: Germany to Send Aid to North Iraq Friday

German air force planes will deliver humanitarian aid to northern Iraq on Friday, media reported, as Chancellor Angela Merkel said Berlin was also considering sending weapons to help the embattled country.

Four German Transall C-160 military transporters, carrying 36 tons of mostly medical and food supplies, will fly via Turkey to the Kurdish city of Arbil, reported national news agency DPA.
