One man was killed and more than 30 people injured when a tornado and violent storms hit northern Germany, ripping tiles off roofs, downing trees and overturning cars, emergency services said Wednesday.

Worst hit was the town of Buetzow near the northern port of Rostock, where bricks lay scattered in the streets after flying debris had badly injured one person and hurt dozens of others late Tuesday.

A widening scandal over claims Germany helped the U.S. spy on European targets triggered tensions in Angela Merkel's coalition Tuesday, which analysts said could potentially prove dangerous for the "untouchable" chancellor. 

Pressure has mounted over reports that the Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency snooped on European firms such as EADS -- which became Airbus -- as well as the French presidency and EU Commission on behalf of the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA).

German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Monday insisted her country needed to work with American intelligence agencies, in the wake of claims Berlin helped the US spy on EU leaders and companies.

Merkel's government has faced growing pressure over the allegations, and while analysts expect the popular leader to weather the scandal, her interior minister has drawn media and opposition fire over the "BND affair", referring to Germany's foreign intelligence service.

Germany deployed two ships to the Mediterranean Monday to assist a European Union migrant rescue mission beefed up last month to stop deadly disasters at sea, the defense ministry said.

The ships Berlin and Hessen arrived at the Greek island of Crete to be loaded up with cargo and personnel, a ministry spokesman said.

Iran is determined to end the "manufactured crisis" over its nuclear program and drafting of a final deal with world powers, though hard, is progressing, Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Monday.

The remarks, on Zarif's official Twitter account, came two days after U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry denounced what he said was "hysteria" from opponents of an agreement, which is due by June 30.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned Sunday that society must "never close its eyes" to anti-Semitism as she joined Holocaust survivors to mark 70 years since the liberation of the former Nazi concentration camp at Dachau.

"We are all forever called upon, to never close our eyes and ears to those who today accost, threaten and attack people when they identify themselves somehow as Jews or also when they side with the state of Israel," Merkel told a solemn ceremony.

European aviation and aeronautics giant Airbus said Thursday it would file a criminal complaint against persons unknown following German media reports it had become a target of U.S. industrial espionage.

"We are aware that as a large company in the sector, we are a target and subject of espionage," the company said in a statement to AFP. "However, in this case we are alarmed because there is concrete suspicion of industrial espionage."

Chancellor Angela Merkel's government faces growing pressure over claims that Germany helped the United States spy on EU leaders and companies, and that a ministry lied about it.

Analysts expect the popular Merkel to weather the scandal, but her close ally, Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere, has drawn media and opposition fire over the "BND affair", referring to the foreign spy service.

European Commission head Jean-Claude Juncker said Thursday he expected Berlin to get to the bottom of a Brussels spy scandal after Germany reportedly snooped on the EU and France at Washington's behest.

In a turnaround for Berlin which has long been portrayed as a victim of snooping by allies, the Sueddeutsche Zeitung daily said German intelligence services had carried out "political espionage" on the Commission and top French officials.

German intelligence services spied on top French officials and the European Commission on behalf of the American spy agency NSA, according to an article to appear Thursday in Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

Germany's BND foreign intelligence agency helped the National Security Agency (NSA) carry out "political espionage" by surveilling "top officials at the French Foreign Ministry, the Elysee Palace and European Commission" the German daily paper is to report.
