A 27-year-old Austrian tourist was killed in northern Ethiopia when his group was attacked during a whitewater rafting trip on the Nile, Austria's foreign ministry said Monday.

The attack occurred on Sunday near Bahir Dar, 550 kilometers (340 miles) northwest of the capital Addis Ababa, ministry spokesman Martin Weiss told AFP.

The rival leaders of Sudan and South Sudan arrived in the Ethiopia Friday to push for progress on stalled economic, oil and security deals between the former civil war foes, officials said.

The summit between Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and his Southern counterpart Salva Kiir comes despite accusations from Juba on Thursday that Khartoum had launched air and ground attacks inside South Sudan.

An Ethiopian court on Tuesday convicted ten people of having links to al-Qaida, including leading "terrorism cells," and of laundering money.

"We have found them guilty," said judge Bahru Darcha.

"Armed groups" from South Sudan clashed with Arab tribesmen in Samaha, a flashpoint border region disputed by Khartoum and Juba, the Sudanese military said on Thursday.

The fighting occurred two days ago, army spokesman Sawarmi Khaled Saad told Agence France Presse.

55 Somalis and Ethiopians drowned or went missing after their boat capsized off Somalia on Tuesday in the worst such disaster in the area in almost two years, the United Nations said.

The U.N. refugee agency said Thursday the incident represents "the biggest loss of life" in the Gulf of Aden since February 2011 when 57 Somali refugees and migrants from the Horn of Africa drowned while attempting to reach Yemen.

The defense ministers of Sudan and South Sudan on Monday cut short talks on demilitarizing the tense border and other security issues but negotiations are going well, the South's minister said.

John Kong flew in from Juba on Sunday for talks with his Sudanese counterpart Abdelrahim Mohammed Hussein.

Ethiopian troops will remain in Somalia until African Union forces fighting Islamists can take over, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said Wednesday, as he met with his Somali counterpart.

"We are waiting for AMISOM (African Union Mission in Somalia) force to come and replace us, and until we get that assurance then we will be waiting there," he told reporters.

Sudan and South Sudan leaders are edging close to signing a deal on festering disputes between the rival neighbors on the fourth day of a presidential summit, Ethiopian officials said Wednesday.

"The final result of the negotiation between the two Sudans is expected to be made public by a press conference," Ethiopia's foreign ministry said in a statement.

Tens of thousands of Ethiopians mourned Sunday the late strongman Meles Zenawi, in the first state funeral staged for a leader of the Horn of Africa nation in more than 80 years.

Followed by giant crowds, Meles' flag-draped coffin slowly processed through the capital from the National Palace to the vast Meskel Square, his family dressed in black following behind, many in tears.
