Seven people were shot at a New Year's party in the Canadian city of Calgary, including one victim who has died of his wounds, news reports said Friday.

The shooters were not among the victims, and police said they fled the scene after they opened fire. 

Five people died overnight in a stabbing rampage at a house party marking the end of university classes in the Canadian city of Calgary, media said on Tuesday.

Police were reportedly called around 1:30 am to a home in a quiet suburban neighborhood where paramedics found three people dead. Two more died in hospital.

At least three people were killed by floodwaters that devastated much of southern Alberta, leading authorities to evacuate the western Canadian city of Calgary's entire downtown. Inside the city's hockey arena, the waters reached as high as the 10th row.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday called the level of flooding "stunning" and said officials don't know yet if it will get worse, but said the water has peaked and stabilized and noted that the weather has gotten better.

A group of Canadian technology workers won a CAN$7 million ($7.1 million) lottery this week on the same day they lost their jobs at an Ottawa manufacturing plant.

The 18 workers won the Lotto 6/49 prize on Wednesday, the same day their company, Smart Technologies, announced massive layoffs, starting in September, a company official told Agence France Presse.
