Major Western Powers Expel Syrian Envoys over Houla Massacre

Major Western powers said Tuesday they would expel Syria's diplomatic envoys in protest at the weekend massacre in the town of Houla, in which more than 100 people were killed.

The United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain as well as Canada, Australia, The Netherlands, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Belgium announced decisions to expel ambassadors or top envoys.

Supporters of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II have floated rival attempts to buy her a new yacht for her diamond jubilee to replace the decommissioned Royal Yacht Britannia.

A self-described "group of ordinary people" have launched the Jubilee Yacht Appeal -- under the slogan "yacht or not" -- in which fans of the monarch can either donate to a yacht or to a group of charities supported by the queen.

Britain Summons Syrian Diplomat over 'Evil' Massacre

Britain summoned Syria's top diplomat in London to the foreign ministry on Monday to protest against the "sickening and evil" Houla massacre of more than 100 people, the government said.

Syria's charge d'affaires -- their ambassador has been withdrawn -- was warned during the meeting with a top Foreign Office diplomat that the international community would take further action if Damascus does not implement U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan.

Lavrov Says ‘Russia Doesn’t Support Syria Government’, Hague Warns of ‘Civil War’

Russia said on Monday it did not support the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad but urged world powers to work for the peace plan of U.N. envoy Kofi Annan and not regime change.

"We do not support the Syrian government. We support the plan of Kofi Annan," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a joint news conference with his British counterpart William Hague.

Britain is to haul in Syria's top diplomat in London following the killing of 92 people -- a third of them children -- in the shelling of the town of Houla, the Foreign Office said Sunday.

Syria's charge d'affaires -- their ambassador has been withdrawn -- will meet with one of the top civil servants in the Foreign Office on Monday so Britain can stress its "condemnation" over the incident.

Giant Photo of UK Royals Unveiled on Thames for Jubilee

A giant photograph of Queen Elizabeth and her family, 100 meters (328 feet) wide and weighing two tons, was put up Friday beside London's Thames river ahead of celebrations for her diamond jubilee.

The 70-meter-high image of the queen, her husband Prince Philip and their children, dating from 35 years ago, was erected on the Sea Containers building to honor her 60 years on the throne -- and mask building work going on inside.

UK Supreme Court to Give Assange Judgment May 30

Britain's Supreme Court said on Wednesday it will give its judgment in the case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's long-running fight against extradition to Sweden on May 30.

The court announced the date in a statement on its website, saying the judgment would start at 9:15 am (0815 GMT) next Wednesday and would last around 10 minutes.

Saudi's defense ministry has signed a $3 billion deal with Britain to buy trainer jets for the kingdom's air force, SPA state news agency reported on Wednesday.

The deal also includes simulators, ground and training equipment and spare parts, SPA said, quoting a defense ministry official.
