U.N. Court Sentences Srebrenica Commander to Life for Genocide

The U.N.'s Yugoslav war crimes court found Bosnian Serb general Zdravko Tolimir guilty of genocide for his role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, Europe's worst atrocity since World War II, and sentenced him to life in jail.

"The majority of the court finds you guilty" of crimes including genocide, judge Christoph Flugge told the Hague-based International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

Bosnian Islamist Gets 18 Years for U.S. Embassy Attack

A Bosnian court on Thursday sentenced an Islamist who opened fire at the U.S. embassy in Sarajevo last year to 18 years in prison.

"Mevlid Jasarevic committed a terrorist act by shooting 105 bullets over 50 minutes towards the American embassy," judge Branko Peric said. "This court sentences him to 18 years in prison."

Bosnian Muslims Protest against Israel

Some 2,000 Bosnian Muslims staged a protest march Friday to condemn "aggression against Palestinians" during Israel's recent strikes on targets in Gaza.

The protestors, mostly Bosnian Muslims and youngsters from Turkey or Arab countries studying in Bosnia, chanted "Israel, terrorists!" or "Zionists, terrorists."

Clinton to Push Bosnia for Reforms at Start of Balkans Tour

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton begins a five-nation Balkans tour on Tuesday, seeking to push regional leaders to stick to existing agreements and enact the reforms needed to join the EU and NATO.

Clinton, who will be joined by European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton during her first stop in Sarajevo, is expected to call on Bosnia to speed up reforms in a country still deeply divided along ethnic lines 17 years after the 1992-1995 war there.

Bosnian Scrap Metal Thief Steals Iron Bridge

A Bosnian scrap metal dealer raised his sights from stealing and illegally selling metal drain covers and made off with an entire iron bridge, local police in the northeast of the country said Friday.

"A few hours after we were informed about this most unusual crime we detained a suspect, a man of 29, at his home," Mile Jurosevic of the police in Brcko in northeast Bosnia said.

I Should Be Rewarded, Karadzic Tells War Crimes Court

A strident Radovan Karadzic told the U.N. Yugoslav war crimes court on Tuesday he should be rewarded for doing everything to avoid war in Bosnia and insisted no one thought there would be genocide.

"I should have been rewarded for all the good things that I've done because I did everything within human power to avoid the war and to reduce the human suffering," the former Bosnian Serb leader told the court in The Hague as he began his own defense against charges including genocide.

Bosnia Bans Would-Be Mayor over Porn

Bosnia's electoral commission on Friday annulled the candidacy of an independent running for mayor in the central town of Zenica next month after he used pornography on his website to attract voters.

Mirad Hadziahmetovic "violated Bosnia's electoral law by publishing pornographic photos and video clips during the electoral campaign" ahead of the October 7, the commission said in a statement explaining the move.

Christians, Muslims, Jews Call for Peace from Sarajevo

Leaders of Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Muslim and Jewish communities Sunday made a pressing call for peace from Bosnia which was the scene of the worst atrocities committed in Europe since World War II.

Stressing the "commitment of Serb people to the strengthening of peace" Serb Orthodox Church Patriarch Irinej said he wished that the future of peoples in the Balkans be "freed from the tragic and painful experiences of the past."

Bosnian Court Hands Down Highest Sentence Yet for Srebrenica

The Bosnian war crimes court on Friday handed down its stiffest sentence yet when it jailed a former elite Bosnian Serb soldier for 43 years for his part in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre.

Stanko Kojic, a member of the Bosnian Serb 10th Sabotage Detachment, was convicted of crimes against humanity for taking part in the notorious July 16 killing of hundreds of people over more than five hours at the Branjevo military farm.

Defense Seeks Karadzic Acquittal, Says No Genocide in Bosnia

Radovan Karadzic and his lawyers on Monday asked the Yugoslav war crimes court to acquit the former Bosnian Serb leader on all counts, arguing that no genocide took place in Bosnia in 1992.

"Dr. Karadzic requests a judgment of acquittal pursuant to rule 98bis for counts one to 11," said his lawyer Peter Robinson at a public hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in The Hague.
