Seven Turkish troops were killed and almost 60 others were wounded Tuesday in a rocket assault on their military convoy in Turkey's southeast, according to local security sources.

The military convoy was hit by Kurdish rebel rockets on the highway on the outskirts of southeastern Bingol province, sparking a fire that wounded 58 soldiers aboard an army bus.

Eight police officers died and nine were wounded in a roadside mine blast Sunday blamed on Kurdish rebels in Turkey's southeast, local security sources said.

The members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) launched the attack around 0715 GMT Sunday as a police vehicle was passing in the Karliova district of Bingol province, the sources said.

A woman blew herself up and killed two other people Saturday near a ruling party building in the eastern Turkish town of Bingol, the local governor told Agence France Presse.

The attack, the first of its kind in a year, took place near the provincial headquarters of the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP), Mustafa Hakan Guvencer said.
