Kids Get Codeine in ER Despite Risks, Guidelines

Despite recommended limits on codeine use in children, the potent painkiller is prescribed for children in at least half a million emergency room visits each year, a study suggests.

Use of the drug in that setting is hardly rampant — just 3 percent of kids' ER visits resulted in a codeine prescription in 2010, the 10-year study found. But with more than 25 million ER visits by children each year, the authors say far too many kids are getting the drug when better options are available.

New Portrait Unveiled for British Queen's Birthday

A portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by renowned British photographer David Bailey has been unveiled to mark the monarch's 88th birthday.

The black-and-white photograph, taken at Buckingham Palace in March, shows the queen smiling broadly. Bailey described his subject as a "very strong woman" with "very kind eyes with a mischievous glint."

'Capt. America' Tops Box Office for Third Week

Captain America continues to vanquish box office foes, triumphing in ticket sales for the third consecutive week and dominating over megastar Johnny Depp's new movie.

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" added another $26 million to its coffers, according to studio estimates Sunday, while Depp's science-fiction thriller, "Transcendence," opened in fourth place with $11 million.

Canadian Author Alistair MacLeod Dies at 77

Alistair MacLeod, the award-winning Canadian author who was best known for his short story collections and novel "No Great Mischief," has died. He was 77.

MacLeod's former publisher, Doug Gibson, confirmed the death on Sunday. He said MacLeod had been in a Windsor, Ontario, hospital ever since suffering a stroke in January.

Discovery Network Cancels Everest Jump

The Discovery Network is canceling a daredevil's planned jump off the summit of Mount Everest in a wing suit next month following the avalanche that killed at least 13 people on Friday.

Network spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg said Sunday that the network's thoughts and prayers go out to the Sherpa community of guides who were the victims of the avalanche.

Poll: Big Bang a Big Question for Most Americans

Few Americans question that smoking causes cancer. But they have more skepticism than confidence in global warming, the age of the Earth and evolution and have the most trouble believing a Big Bang created the universe 13.8 billion years ago, an Associated Press-GfK poll found.

Rather than quizzing scientific knowledge, the survey asked people to rate their confidence in several statements about science and medicine.

Woman Reunited with Dog, TV Snatched on 1st Date

A woman has been reunited with her Yorkshire Terrier and flat-screen TV that were snatched during her first date with a man she met online.

The woman called police early Saturday to say that her dog, Violet, had been tied by its leash to the TV, and both were left in the front yard of her Dover home, the Daily Record of Parsippany (http://dailyre.co/1eNpgE1) reported. Violet appeared to be in good health.

Miss America: Don't Suspend Teen over Prom Invite

Miss America is asking a Pennsylvania school district to reconsider the punishment of a senior who asked her to prom during the question-and-answer portion of an assembly.

The York Dispatch reported Sunday (http://bit.ly/1iBazDw) that Nina Davuluri posted a statement on the Miss America Organization's Facebook page saying she contacted Central York High School to ask officials to rethink the three-day in-school suspension issued to 18-year-old Patrick Farves.

Rubin "Hurricane" Carter never surrendered hope of regaining his freedom, not even after he was convicted of a triple murder, then convicted again and abandoned by many prominent supporters.

For 19 long years, the prizefighter was locked in a prison cell far away from the spotlight and the adulation of the boxing ring. But when he at last won his biggest fight — for exoneration — he betrayed little bitterness. Instead, Carter dedicated much of his remaining life to helping other prisoners and exposing other injustices.
