President Donald Trump arrived Wednesday in Qatar, where he was greeted by the country’s ruling emir, Sheikh Tamim Al Thani, as he kicked off the second leg of his three-nation Middle East tour this week.

In a stunning engagement earlier in the day in Saudi Arabia, Trump met with Syria's new leader, Ahmad al-Sharaa — a onetime insurgent who had spent years imprisoned by U.S. troops in Iraq. Trump said the rapprochement with Syria came at the urging of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

U.S. President Donald Trump told Gulf leaders on Wednesday that he urgently wants "to make a deal" with Iran to wind down its nuclear program but that Tehran must end its support of proxy groups throughout the region as part of any potential agreement.

Iran "must stop sponsoring terror, halt its bloody proxy wars, and permanently and verifiably cease pursuit of nuclear weapons," Trump said in remarks at a meeting of leaders from the Gulf Cooperation Council hosted by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in the Saudi capital. "They cannot have a nuclear weapon."

The U.N. peacekeeping mission in southern Lebanon has reported that armed activities by Israeli forces north of the Blue Line -- the U.N.-drawn boundary -- violate a Security Council resolution that ended the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

U.N. spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in the latest incident a peacekeeping patrol reported that 10 Israeli soldiers crossed north of the Blue Line on Monday near Alma al-Shaab.

A British-Nigerian art expert who appeared on the BBC's Bargain Hunt show has pleaded guilty to failing to report that he sold pricey works to a suspected financier of Lebanon's Hezbollah.

Oghenochuko Ojiri, 53, was charged with failing to disclose art sales between October 2020 and December 2021. He pleaded guilty in Westminster Magistrates' Court to eight offences under a section of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening security cooperation, vowing to work against threats, including Kurdish militants based on Iraqi territory.

Long-haul carrier Emirates reported on Thursday that it earned annual profits of $5.2 billion, with the state-owned firm declaring itself the world's most profitable airline as global aviation fully returned to flight after the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The profits came as the Dubai-based carrier served 53.7 million passengers out of its hub of Dubai International Airport, compared to 51.9 million passengers in the fiscal year prior. It had aftertax profits of $4.7 billion that same period.
