Several Lebanese men arrested in a deadly ambush in the Syrian town of Tall Kalakh will not be handed over to Lebanese authorities and will be tried in Damascus instead, An Nahar daily reported on Thursday.

The newspaper said that around three of the armed men, who mostly hail from North Lebanon, were arrested in the ambush made by Syrian regime forces last week while 14 of them were killed as they infiltrated Tall Kalakh to fight alongside the Free Syrian Army.

Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdul Karim Ali revealed on Wednesday that his country's authorities will hand over the bodies of those who were killed in Syria in three batches starting this Saturday.

Ali's announcement came during a meeting he held Wednesday night with Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour, the National News Agency reported.

Fresh fighting erupted in the northern city of Tripoli on Tuesday after a tense night between the rival neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen over the killing of Lebanese men in the Syrian town of Tall Kalakh in an ambush.

While it is not yet clear the number of the Lebanese fighters killed by regime forces in the Syrian border town, the families of the slain men are demanding the authorities to repatriate the bodies and are threatening to take escalatory measures.

Syrian Ambassador Ali Abdul Karim Ali commented on Monday on PM Najib Miqati's visit to France, saying that “the Lebanese cabinet is the one to decide what to do and what not to do”.

“What matters most to us is preserving Lebanese-Syrian ties and maintaining security on our border,” Ali added after meeting Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali on Wednesday denied that his country was involved in the assassination of Intelligence Bureau chief Maj. Gen. Wissam al-Hasan, saying Israel or “some Takfiri forces” might be behind the crime.

“Lebanon's stability is in the interest of Syria which condemns all assassinations and is preoccupied with its internal crisis and with confronting the conspiracies plotted by intelligence agents in Europe, the world and the region,” Ali said following talks with Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour.

Lebanese Forces leader Samir Geagea demanded on Saturday the suspension of all the agreements with Syria, the expulsion of Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali and the immediate resignation of the cabinet.

“They assassinated (ISF Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam) al-Hasan to prevent the work of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon from revealing the truth,” Geagea said in a news conference at his Maarab residence.

March 14 youth groups held Saturday an open-ended sit-in at the Martyrs Square in Downtown Beirut against the assassination of Internal Security Forces Intelligence Bureau head Brigadier General Wissam al-Hasan.

The protesters also erected tents near the Grand Serail to press the resignation of the cabinet.

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali welcomed on Wednesday the national dialogue and Lebanese government's assertions that the Lebanese army should perform its duties in maintaining security along the border and pursue all who tamper with stability.

He said: “It's in Lebanon's interest to prevent the smuggling of arms to Syria and my country is not linked to all matters that target Lebanon's security.”

Syria's Ministry of Information on Monday denied the sacking of the country's ambassador to Lebanon and said a previous email announcement was a result of hacking, state television reported.

"The email account of the ministry was hacked in order to publish inaccurate information" about the reported dismissal of the Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali, the ministry said in a statement carried by state television.

Syrian Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali on Tuesday said the memorandum submitted by the March 14 forces to President Michel Suleiman is “unachievable” and “unrealistic,” calling on the Lebanese government to respond to this “media uproar.”

“Syria has always made it clear that the treaties signed between the two countries serve Lebanon’s interest before Syria’s,” Ali said in an interview on al-Manar television.
