Suleiman to Feltman: Lebanese-Syrian Ties as Old as the Two Countries

President Michel Suleiman asserted to U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman that Lebanese-Syrian ties “are as old as the two countries,” reported As Safir newspaper on Monday.

His statements came as a response to the U.S. official’s inquiry about Lebanon’s position on the developments in Syria, which Feltman was surprised by, according to the newspaper.

“The historical, geographic, present, and future circumstances have contributed to these solid ties,” the president added.

In addition, Suleiman cited the Taif Accord that described the relationship between Lebanon and Syria, asking: “How do you expect Lebanon to become an instrument to punish Syria for its national and popular choices?”

Regarding the government formation process, As Safir reported that Prime Minister-designate Najib Miqati had informed Feltman that this is a “purely Lebanese issue.”

His visitors quoted him as saying that the dictates of “U.S. officials do not bind him and nothing can affect his convictions on Lebanese national affairs.”

Miqati added that none of the American and European officials he had met with had issued warnings to him over the government formation.
