Justice Minister Shakib Qortbawi revealed on Thursday that authorities released two detainees allegedly charged with forming an armed terrorist group and undermining the authority of the state, as well as having links to al-Qaida.

The two members allegedly belong to a six-member network that infiltrated Lebanon to carry out “sabotage” operations.

Qortbawi told al-Joumhouria newspaper that Shadi al-Mawlawi, who was detained on Saturday in Tripoli, and the remaining three members of the network are still under investigation.

However, al-Liwaa newspaper reported that authorities released 3 detainees, while al-Mawlawi, Qatari national Abdul Azizi Qataria and a Palestinian are still under arrest.

Meanwhile, al-Joumhouria reported that the army intelligence bureau arrested Lebanese Samir Kanjo and Syrian national Ons Othman for allegedly belonging to al-Qaida.

Obtained information revealed that there is “clear evidence” that links Kanjo and Othman to al-Qaida.

The two were detained in Beirut on Tuesday, the daily said.

On the Islamist detainees in Roumieh prison, Qortbawi told al-Joumhouria that they are comprised of 180 prisoners from Lebanon and various Arab countries.

He said that some of them might be released “anytime soon.”

Clashes erupted over the weekend in the northern city of Tripoli between the two rival neighborhoods of Sunni Bab al-Tabbaneh and Alawite Jabal Mohsen after the General Security Department arrested al-Mawlawi.

His arrest angered the Islamist demonstrators in Tripoli who were holding sit-ins in al-Nour square over the past few weeks in protest against the continuous detention of the Islamist prisoners.

most probably you are a kid, because you do not know how the civil war started in lebanon in the 70s. your answers denote ignorance of history.
hizbushaitan is playing this card hoping t push for a new taef, which will not happen whatever they do.

@mowaten
you beleive FT replied to my initaial comment? I was saying that for over 5 years now, a large number of people have been arrested and their trial is still not done, while a convicted traitor has already been released, represents a serious marginilization of a large secte.
aoun's rhetoric as well as fpmers in general talk only about salafis as if they were crawling all around lebanon...
hizbushaitan invading beirut and murdering its people without any of them being arrested...
so please go to bed.

Hizbollah is a terrorist outlaw organisation, sponsoring political murders, drug traficking, and a puppet in the Syro-Iranian alliance. They're the ones who should be banned and their leaders thrown in jail, and not the LF, when Samir Geagea was jailed for a syrian masterminded terrorist explosion at Saydet el Najaat church in the mid-eighites, because he refused to be part of the Syrian takeover on state institutions. The chiite Community has only to blame itself through Hizbollah foul play, attempt to control by blackmail all state institutions, drag all Lebanese into a political agenda they abhor !

Extremism breeds extremism.
Lebanon is bound for another round of destruction caused by sectarian polarization. The Lebanese blindly route for their respective sects allowing extremists to slowly control the scene.
This is unacceptable after the decades of suffering. The lebanese have proven once again that they are easy incite and that they remain easy to exploit by antagonistic regional powers.

Flame thrower, Samir Geagea was found guilty for crimes commited under the state of civil war.Others should also have. To name a few; Nabih Berri, Walid Joumblatt, Koleilat, etc...But there's a point after which, you draw the line, you say civil war is over, rebuild the Satet , and put everyone on equal footing under the rule of law. This is called civil peace. Crimes become punishable, law prevails. Otherwise, let everyone pretend he is resisting Israel, arm himself, give tretcherous blows under the belt, and apply a law of his own making. This is called chaos and civil war!

The Party of God, aka the “Party of Murdering Thugs” will do everything in its power to fabricate the excuse and justification to ignite a Lebanese civil war in order to take the attention away from Syria and Iran and delay the elections of 2013. Just like their weapons, they are illegitimate sons of IRAN posing as Lebanese resistance!

Karim...We have dozens of Al-Qaedas in Lebanon. Sunni Salafi/Wahabi, shiaa Welayat El-faqih, Palestenian Hamas, Fath el-Islam, SNP, etc. etc. etc., just name it and we got it....... the only thing we are short on is strong Army, strong Government, honest politicians and Patriotic Lebanese.

Free French were all guilty according to the Nazis and their installed Fichi Government. So being found guilty by the occupying Syrians and their Proxy Government is a proof of his innocence and patriotism.
