Berri Threatens to Dissolve Parliament over Upcoming Session Dilemma

Speaker Nabih Berri warned on Wednesday of dissolving the parliament if lawmakers abstained from attending any session that he calls for without having a valid excuse.

Berri lashed out at Kataeb and Free Patriotic Movement MPs, stressing that if “a key component didn't attend the sessions, then he will postpone them.”

“If they insist on paralyzing the parliament, then I will call for dissolving it, in accordance with my jurisdiction,” Berri said in comments published in local newspapers.

He pointed out that as soon as a new president is elected, then he will call on the cabinet to dissolve the parliament according to the Constitution.

Vacuum striking the presidential post is having a tough impact on the cabinet and the parliament as the state is threatened with further crises over ongoing rows between the rival parties.

Berri is seeking to call for a session to approve urgent issues, including the wage scale for the public sector and the food safety draft-law.

Parliament convenes twice a year in two ordinary sessions -- the first starts mid-March until the end of May and the second from the middle of October through the end of December.

On Monday, deputy Speaker Farid Makari said that the majority of the representatives of the parliamentary blocs agreed to attend the upcoming legislative session.

Ha,so the Kataeb & FPM are the culprits now, and Hezbollah is not the one imposing anything or putting any roadblocks?
What a joker & real thug this Berri is.

Well, Lebanon has the Parliament it deserves: a pretty bad one.

nearly a year without a president because his allies do not come to elect one and it is OK.

Thumb _mowaten_ 22 April 2015, 12:06

No, it's not "ok", but it's still far better than having a war criminal as president.

After 23 or so failed sessions to elect a President, Berri did not feel the need to dissolve the parliament....

Mr. Berri,s top talking and start acting like a real Speaker. Then you cannot blame Kataeb, ma your bosses at Hezbollah are the very ones strapping Aboul Mish Claoun with fake promises and who knows, maybe threats as well. Just dissolve the damn parliament, it's of no use anyway and let's get moving

The more time passes, the more the Caporal sees that presidency is fading away, the more he is getting nearer to explosion.
He will leave behind him lots of money that is already in his wive's name.

And give up his Chair? BS Mr. Berri. Your threat like everything else about you is quite empty.
