U.N.: Two Peacekeepers Injured in Golan Shelling

Two U.N. peacekeepers suffered injuries in shelling on Thursday in the Golan Heights ceasefire zone between Israel and Syria, a U.N. peacekeeping spokesman said.

"The two suffered minor injuries from the fallout of heavy weapons fire in the area," U.N. peacekeeping spokesman Kieran Dwyer told Agence France Presse.

The Philippine government said earlier that one of its troops in the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) in the Golan had been wounded by shrapnel.

Dwyer was not immediately able to say whether the shelling was linked to a Syrian government operation to retake a Golan crossing point from rebel forces. He also did not give the nationalities of the casualties.

Rebel forces briefly took the town and crossing point of Quneitra but President Bashar Assad's forces moved in to seize it back.

A Filipino military statement said a Philippine U.N. peacekeeper was wounded by shrapnel Thursday amid fighting between Syrian government and rebel forces.

"Currently, he is being treated by medics inside a shelter and is in stable and good condition," a military statement said.
