March 8 Delegation Meets Mansour, Hails Stance over Syria

Hizbullah, AMAL and Free Patriotic Movement delegations visited on Monday Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour to express solidarity with his recent stance over Syria at the Arab League meeting.

The deputy head of Hizbullah's political bureau, Mahmoud Qomati, stressed from Bustros Palace that the meeting was aimed at voicing support to Mansour's stance.

Mansour called in his speech at the Arab Ministerial Council in Cairo on Wednesday for scrapping a decision to suspend the membership of Syria from the Arab League.

The minister's statement drew the rejection of several officials locally including Prime Minister Najib Miqati.

President Michel Suleiman stressed over the weekend that any stance taken by government officials, in particular the Foreign Minister, should reflect the state's dissociation policy.

“We informed Mansour that he was able to carry out the dissociation policy at the Arab League as he rejected to allow the Arab countries to directly intervene in the developments in Syria,” Qomati told reporters.

He slammed those who criticized the FM, accusing them of violating the dissociation policy by offering sides money, arms and fighters.

Asked about the officials he is referring to, Qomati rejected to name anyone saying his statements are “general.”

The FM down played criticism on his speech after returning to Beirut, saying that he “carefully” chose his words as he is keen to preserve Lebanon's best interest.

The Arab League suspended Syria in November 2011 as a sharp rebuke for Assad's leadership over its brutal crackdown on demonstrators seeking to topple his regime.

It said at the time the suspension would apply until Assad implemented an Arab deal to end violence against protesters.

A year later, the League recognized the Syrian National Coalition headed by Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib as the "legitimate representative and main interlocutor with the Arab League.
