The United Nations announced on Monday that it is committed to support Lebanon in holding the parliamentary elections on time.
“We stress on our commitment to support Lebanon's efforts towards having the parliamentary elections on time, U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly stated after a meeting between the international organization, a European Union delegation and donors, and that discussed the steps undertaken to date in this regard.
"Holding the elections on time is a must for stability and democracy in Lebanon,” Plumbly expressed.
He noted: “We hope the current discussions between the different factions in the country will result in a consensus on an electoral law”.
The meeting discussed the logistic preparations and the registration processes that are “mandatory for holding the elections in June based on the constitutional requirements”, a statement released after the meeting by the U.N. explained.
Meanwhile, EU ambassador to Lebanon Angelina Eichhorst said: “The EU backs the different recommendations proposed to make sure the elections conform to the international standards”.
The EU participants shared during the meeting their scope of work during the elections, including possibly sending a delegation to supervise the voting process.
