Syrian Mortar Shells Fall on Israel-occupied Golan

Three mortar shells fired from Syria landed in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights on Thursday, causing no damage or injuries, the army said, in the latest apparent spillover from violence ravaging Syria.

"They are apparently shells fired in error during fighting between different forces inside Syria," an Israeli army spokeswoman told Agence France Presse.

The incident is the latest in which fighting between rebels and government forces in Syria has crossed over into the Golan Heights.

Earlier this week, an Israeli military vehicle was hit by gunfire from Syria, and Israel has lodged an official complaint with the United Nations over an incident in which three Syrian tanks entered a demilitarized zone in the Golan.

On Tuesday, Israel called on the U.N. Security Council to act in response to the incidents, which the country's U.N. ambassador Ron Prosor said Israel viewed with "utmost concern."

Prosor said the presence of Syrian tanks in the Golan buffer zone was a "grave violation" of a 1974 agreement on security in the sector. He said there had been a string of violations of the accord in recent months.

Syria remains formally at war with Israel, which captured part of the Golan Heights in the 1967 Six Day War and annexed it in 1981 in a move the international community does not recognize.

Since the 1974 agreement was signed, a 1,200-strong unarmed U.N. force has patrolled the Golan buffer zone.
