Maronite Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi condemned on Friday political action aimed at achieving personal gains and obstructing the functioning of state institutions.
“The church condemns all political performance that is solely limited to achieving personal gains at the expense of the public interest and that aims at obstructing state institutions … in search for power,” al-Rahi said in his opening statement of a seminar held in Bkirki.
“Politics is a moral work that is incompatible with corruption, despotism and dependence on money or abroad,” he said.
Al-Rahi rejected any political work that limits the will of the people and exceeds their exceptions and needs by imposing on them an undesirable status quo.
The patriarch visited President Michel Suleiman on Thursday, lauding his call for dialogue.
Only dialogue can provide an opportunity for “transition to a better political and economic period,” he said.
