Any Electoral Law Contradicting Taef Accord is Rejected, Says Miqati
Prime Minister Najib Miqati stressed on Tuesday that he is holding on to the electoral draft law referred by his cabinet to the parliament, saying that any proposal that contradicts the Taef accord is rejected.
“If there is any defection in the distribution of districts in our draft law then the parliament can amend them,” Miqati told reporters after holding talks with Speaker Nabih Berri in Ain el-Tineh.
The government's draft law calls for dividing Lebanon into 13 medium-sized districts based on proportionality.
Miqati reiterated his support to the adoption of an electoral law based on proportional representation, which best suits the country on the long-run.
“It guarantees the participation of all the Lebanese in the parliament and legislation,” he said.
Miqati pointed out that Berri voiced his support to any law that enhances the representation of all categories.
The two officials also discussed the latest local developments in which the premier briefed Berri on the results of his discussions on the sidelines of last week's U.N. General Assembly meeting in New York.
