U.N. Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly discussed with Speaker Nabih Berri on Tuesday preparations for the 2013 parliamentary elections.
He revealed after the talks the formation of a U.N. “technical unit” to provide support during next years polls.
He said that he is looking forward to cooperating with all sides in order to ensure that the elections are held in an honest, free, and transparent manner.
Commenting on the recent release of Syrian captives that were held in the custody of the Meqdad clan's military wing, Plumbly praised the development, hoping that the remainder of captives held in Lebanon would be released soon.
The army had conducted at dawn on Tuesday a raid in Beirut's southern suburbs to release the abductees.
They were kidnapped in retaliation to the kidnapping of Hassan al-Meqdad in Syria in August.
The U.N. official quoted Berri as stressing the importance of national unity during the critical time in the region.
