Masked Men Kill Fatah Member in Ain el-Hilweh

A former Palestinian convict was killed by three masked men at the refugee camp of Ain el-Hilweh at dawn Friday, the National News Agency reported.

NNA said that Saber Shukri al-Khatib, a 25-year-old member of the mainstream Fatah faction, was shot dead by the three men in the camp's al-Manshiyeh neighborhood around 2:00 am.

The assailants escaped to an unknown location, the agency said.

According to NNA, al-Khatib had been previously jailed in a Lebanese prison for involvement in incidents and shootings in Ain el-Hilweh that lies near the southern city of Sidon.

Following the incident, the Palestinian follow-up committee issued a statement after a meeting it held at Fatah's base to open an investigation into the killing and restore order and stability to the camp.

Ain el-Hilweh, the largest Palestinian camp in the country, is home to about 50,000 refugees and is known to harbor extremists and fugitives.
