SNC Member Says Syrian Regime Risking its Presence in Lebanon

Syrian National Council member Bassam al-Imadi stressed on Tuesday that the Syrian regime is “risking its most important cards” in Lebanon by tasking ex-Minister Michel Samaha with carrying out the terrorist plot targeting Lebanon.

President “Bashar Assad, who previously threatened to ignite the region, will not hesitate in sacrificing his allies in Lebanon,” al-Imadi told An Nahar newspaper.

Assad said in 2011 that any conflict in Syria “will burn the whole region. If the plan is to divide Syria, that is to divide the whole region."

Samaha was arrested last week following information that he was planning various attacks in Lebanon.

The Syrian opposition member noted that the regime will exert efforts to portray Samaha’s case as “fabrications, although there is compelling evidence” that proves his involvement.

Government deputy Commissioner to the Military Court Judge Sami Sader charged on Saturday Samaha, Syrian security Chief Maj. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, and a Syrian Colonel known as Brig. Gen. Adnan with forming a group to commit crimes in Lebanon.

They were also charged with plotting to assassinate political and religious figures.
