Saniora to Meet Suleiman Monday to Inform Him of March 14 Camp’s Ongoing Boycott of Dialogue

The head of the Mustaqbal parliamentary bloc MP Fouad Saniora is scheduled to hold talks on Monday with President Michel Suleiman to inform him of the March 14 camp’s position on the national dialogue, reported the daily An Nahar on Sunday.

It said that the former premier will likely inform the president of the camp’s ongoing boycott of the dialogue, which is set to resume on Thursday.

Informed March 14 sources told the Central News Agency that the decision will be based on recent developments, adding that the boycott is not aimed against Suleiman “but stems from convictions by various members of the camp of the futility of the all-party talks.”

The pan-Arab daily al-Hayat reported on Sunday that efforts had been exerted by the Mustaqbal movement and other March 14 factions to resume the dialogue on Thursday given that Suleiman is likely to propose his vision of a defense strategy for Lebanon.

Informed sources told the daily that conflicting positions on the dialogue had emerged among the camp’s various forces, with some sides supporting the resumption of the talks and others haven’t.

Those supporting the return to the talks had justified their position by saying that Suleiman had presented a vision of a defense strategy that asserts the authority of the state in controlling arms in Lebanon.

Those opposing the talks explained that Hizbullah is adamant in its position of refusing to discuss its weapons arsenal.

The March 14 camp had suspended its participation at the national dialogue mainly over the failure to address Hizbullah’s possession of arms, as well as that of Palestinians inside and outside refugee camps.
