Charbel: Christian Parties Nearing Deal on Proportional Representation

The four major Christian political parties have neared an agreement on the division of districts in a new electoral law based on proportional representation, Interior Minister Marwan Charbel said.

The minister told al-Liwaa daily published on Friday that he has information that the Free Patriotic Movement, the Phalange party, the Lebanese Forces and Marada movement have almost completed their proposal on Charbel’s draft-law.

The four parties’ representatives have been holding meetings through a committee formed in Bkirki.

The cabinet is set to discuss the electoral law that will likely be adopted in the 2013 parliamentary elections during a session at Baabda palace on Monday.

An Nahar newspaper said that President Michel Suleiman is speeding up the adoption of the draft-law and its referral to parliament for approval.

According to Charbel, the draft is based on dividing the country into 14-16 medium size districts with the possibility of expansion or reduction of the size.
