Miqati to Teachers: Cabinet Committed to New Wages Scale

Prime Minister Najib Miqati urged on Monday the teachers to resume the correction of the official exams as the cabinet is committed to resolve the controversial issue of boosting the salaries of public sector teachers and employees.

“There is no justification or reason to suspend the correction of the official exams,” Miqati told As Safir newspaper.

The premier tasked Education Minister Hassan Diab to hold a meeting with the Syndicate Coordination Committee, which is a coalition of private and public school teachers and public sector employees, to stress that the government is committed to the deal over increasing the teachers’ salaries.

The agreement between the two sides states that the cabinet would pass the salary scale in June and implement it at the beginning of July.

“If the parliament delayed the approval of the new salary scale for the public sector, we will separate the part related to the teachers, and we will refer it independently,” Miqati told the daily.

The Syndicate Coordination Committee announced on Friday that it boycotted the correction of the exams over the government’s failure to include the new wage scale in the state budget.

It also called on its followers to hold a sit-in on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. near the ministry of education and state institutions.

The head of the Secondary Teachers Association, Hanna Gharib, Gharib warned on Saturday that the teachers will “hold a large Intifada” if the ministerial committee does not agree with the SCC on its demands.
