Miqati Responding to March 14: There are Constitutional Methods to Topple Govt.

Prime Minister Najib Miqati noted on Friday that the March 14 camp’s demand for the resignation of the government is not new, saying that they have been making this demand since its formation in 2011.

He said: “There are constitutional means to topple the government and we will continue our work until they are provided.”

“The government’s productivity will continue and it will not halt because of futile campaigns whose goals are known to all,” he told reporters during his ongoing trip to Germany.

“We have remained silent over the incitement for too long. Some sides do nothing but criticize the government,” said the premier.

The March 14 forces had renewed on Thursday their demand for the resignation of the government in light of the assassination attempt against MP Butros Harb.

Addressing the ongoing dispute at parliament given the Christian MPs’ boycott, Miqati remarked: “Contacts are ongoing to reach a solution to this problem and we hope it will be resolved soon.”

He said that the meeting he held with Energy Minister Jebran Bassil ahead of his visit to Germany was aimed at reaching a solution.

On Tuesday, Speaker Nabih Berri suspended a parliamentary session for lack of quorum after Christian blocs boycotted it over the approval of Electricite du Liban contract workers’ full-employment.

“The boycott is based on political reasons and not sectarian ones,” Berri said.

Change and Reform bloc, Phalange party and Lebanese Forces lawmakers took the decision to boycott the morning session to protest the draft law.

Miqati had arrived in Germany on Wednesday where he held talks with a number of officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel on Thursday.
