Suicide Bomber Kills Three in North Iraq Market

A suicide bomber killed three people in Iraq's main northern city Mosul on Thursday, the latest victims of a spike in nationwide unrest in recent weeks.

The attacker detonated an explosives-packed vest at around 2:00 pm (1100 GMT) in the middle of a market in Mosul, 350 kilometers (220 miles) north of Baghdad, according to police Lieutenant Khalaf al-Juburi.

Hamid al-Omar, a doctor at Mosul General Hospital, confirmed receiving three bodies from the attack.

Also on Thursday, a man driving a car bomb in the northern city of Tikrit set off the explosives when he was cornered by police, wounding two people, a police colonel and a medical official said.

The latest violence comes amid a spike in attacks, with Iraq suffering a wave of unrest in June that left at least 282 people dead, according to an Agence France Presse tally, though government figures said 131 Iraqis died.

While violence in Iraq has declined dramatically since its peak in 2006-2007, attacks remain common across the country.
