United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Derek Plumbly attended a tripartite meeting held at al-Naqoura crossing between the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon and senior Lebanese and Israel officials.
UNIFIL Commander Maj.-Gen. Paolo Serra presided the meeting on Wednesday.
Serra described the talks as “constructive.”
“Both parties expressed their full support and commitment to work together with UNIFIL for the implementation of the relevant provisions of resolution 1701 and to maintain calm in the area,” he said.
Serra pointed out that the situation in the South has remained “generally quiet and stable,” as both parties maintained their commitment to the cessation of hostilities.
According to a statement issued by the UNIFIL, the meeting tackled issues relevant to the implementation of U.N. Security Council resolution 1701, including the situation along the Blue Line and the violations and incidents, in addition to the withdrawal of Israeli forces from northern Ghajar.
The meeting comes after an Israeli jet blew up a spy device on Monday between the southern towns of Zrariyeh and Tayr Filsay.
In December 2011, Israel detonated a spy device it had placed on the party’s telecommunications network.
Lebanon filed a complaint with the United Nations over the Israeli spy device discovered in December, deeming it a “blatant violation of the country’s sovereignty and Security Council resolution 1701 and a threat to international peace and security.”
