Lebanese Forces Leader Samir Geagea said Wednesday that the “government is leaving the army without a policy or plan to confront security events,” adding that Energy Minister Jebran Bassil “should resign if he cannot address the electricity issue.”
At a press conference held in Maarab, Geagea said that “the electricity shortage is unacceptable and Lebanon did not witness such a blackout in all areas, even during war.”
He added: “We are not blaming the current minister, but all the previous energy ministers were part of March 8 forces.”
“Why wouldn’t Jebran Bassil resign if he is unable to make changes? Isn’t he the energy minister? If he cannot resolve the issue he should leave his post.”
The LF leader stated that “Bassil proved his inability to address the electricity issue, because four years passed and he did not change anything regarding this matter.”
Asked about the governmental performance, Geagea said that “the best decision the government would take is its resignation,” pointing out that the frequent security incidents prompted other countries to lose faith in Lebanon.
He pointed out that “the national dialogue is a waste of time and takes attention away from main problems and the economic situation in Lebanon is heading from bad to worse.”
“Is it possible that the state still has no budget? This is irresponsible … Tourism in Lebanon is deteriorating and Arabs do not trust our country anymore,” he added.
Geagea said that the government leaves the army to confront security incidents “without a policy or a plan, and all the ministers do is voicing their poetic support to the army.”
“Is it reasonable to leave the army alone in solving the Palestinian camps’ issues? Why didn’t any of the Lebanese leaders call Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas?” he said, describing the cabinet as “deaf and absent.”
Geagea addressed the government saying: “You should have mercy and resign, or this country will turn into a land without authority.”
