Al-Maqdad: Damascus to 'Work For Success of Annan Plan’

Syria remains committed to the peace plan brokered by U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Maqdad said on Monday, following a meeting with the chief U.N. observer.

"We shall work for the success of Annan plan," Maqdad told reporters, adding that he discussed with Major General Robert Mood "the joint work that we need to carry out together after the full deployment" of the U.N.-backed truce observer mission in Syria.

Almost 300 U.N. unarmed military observers have been deployed in Syria to monitor a putative ceasefire in place since April 12, but which has been violated every day since then.

"We shall work according to the preliminary understanding, and to develop this understanding for a more comprehensive review of the tasks before both of us," Maqdad told reporters.

"We shall do our best to contribute to the protection of the mission; the life of each person in the mission is very precious to us, and we are doing our best in this regard."

Mood said the meeting was "professional and good."

The international community has frequently urged Damascus to implement the Annan plan, whose six points include a cessation of hostilities, a Syrian-led political dialogue, the liberation of political prisoners, the freedom to demonstrate and free access for journalists.
