Jumblat Demands Returning Lebanese Pilgrims, Warns against Falling for Syrian Regime’s Traps

Progressive Socialist Party leader MP Walid Jumblat demanded on Monday that the Lebanese pilgrims who were kidnapped in Syria on Tuesday be returned to Lebanon, urging all sides to “exercise restraint.”

He warned in his weekly editorial in the PSP-affiliated al-Anbaa magazine “against falling for the Syrian regime’s traps” should any of the supporters of the victims seek revenge against the abduction.

“I call on all the Syrian people to thwart the regime’s plans to spark sectarian strife,” he declared.

“The Syrian people have so far succeeded in evading the regime’s traps, starting with that of igniting strife,” he noted.

Jumblat urged the residents of Syria’s Jabal al-Arab, and the whole of the country, to be diligent “now more than ever” and be wary of the “great dangers” being planned by the regime.

“In the past, the Syrian people succeeded in defeating foreign oppression by remaining true to their Arabism,” remarked the Druze leader.

“Any attempt to add a sectarian characteristic to the revolution will serve as a crushing blow to all the people’s sacrifices,” he remarked.

On May 22, 11 Lebanese pilgrims were abducted in Aleppo as they were on their way by land to Lebanon from a pilgrimage to Iran.

It is unknown who has abducted them, with claims that the rebel Free Syrian Army is behind the operation, allegations it has denied.
