Phalange Party chief Amin Gemayel demanded on Monday that an investigation into the death of Sheikh Ahmed Abdul Wahed and his aide Sheikh Mohammed Merheb be launched as soon as possible “for the sake of maintaining Lebanon’s higher interest.”
He said: “Officials should set Lebanon as a priority in order to avoid instability.”
He made his remarks in a telephone call to former Premier Saad Hariri.
Gemayel called on all sides to “realize the dangerousness of the situation in Lebanon and the hefty price the Lebanese would pay” should the country spiral into unrest.
He made his remarks in light of the death of Sheikh Abdul Wahed and his companion on Sunday at an army checkpoint in the northern town of al-Kweikhat.
The death sparked outrage throughout Akkar and various regions of Lebanon where protesters blocked roads in anger.
The anti-Syria cleric’s death also caused armed clashes between supporters of al-Mustaqbal movement and Arab Movement party near the Beirut Arab University in Tariq al-Jedideh, leaving two dead.
