Conflicting reports emerged on Wednesday over threats made by Electricite du Liban's contract workers to set the company’s offices in Mar Mikhael on fire if their demands were not carried out.
According to the National News agency the contract workers urged the company’s employees in Beirut to leave the building before 11:00 a.m.
They warned that they would set the offices on fire if the parliament’s bureau committee and the administrative and justice committee didn’t approve their full-time employment.
MTV reported that the contract workers also warned the company’s general manager, Kamal al-Hayek, against entering the building.
However, EDL contract workers denied to Voice of Lebanon radio (100.5) all the “rumors,” stressing that their strike will remain peaceful.
The Internal Security Forces swiftly deployed near the company in Beirut, reports said.
EDL contract employees have been protesting for the past two weeks against the cabinet’s failure to approve their full-time employment draft law.
The Committee of EDL Contract Workers and Collectors said in a statement that some employees have been contract workers for over 20 years.
