Aoun to Make Hash Retorts at FPM Rally

Free Patriotic Movement leader Michel Aoun is expected on Saturday to snap back at President Michel Suleiman, Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat and al-Mustaqbal movement at a rally that would set the stage for future campaigns by his party ahead of the 2013 parliamentary polls.

The FPM is organizing the rally at the Platea theater in Sahel Alma in Kesrouan district on the seventh anniversary of Aoun’s return from exile to Paris.

An Nahar daily quoted an FPM source as saying that the rally is aimed at snapping back at accusations that the movement has lost its popular support.

Saturday’s event is also the start of an escalatory campaign that would set the choices of the movement and mainly its reform efforts, the source said.

Aoun has been at loggerheads with Suleiman over several issues and mainly the appointment of the head of the Higher Judicial Council. They took their dispute to the social networking sites last week when the FPM chief accused the president of begging for his seat.

But Suleiman retorted, saying a consensual president does not beg for the presidency and on the contrary, everyone asks him to accept the post of president.

Aoun is also likely to respond to Jumblat, who on Friday said the “irrational movement led by Michel Aoun is paralyzing everything.”

He accused Aoun of “seeking to control all the organs of the state: judiciary, security, politics, administration and elections.”

Jumblat, who is snubbing proportional representation in the elections, will face the retort of Aoun who will stress that the winner-takes-all law of 1960 is rejected, al-Akhbar daily said.

Aoun will also make a harsh retort to the opposition al-Mustaqbal movement led by ex-PM Saad Hariri, the FPM sources told An Nahar.
