Aoun: Geagea Jumped to Conclusions over his Assassination Attempt

Free Patriotic Movement leader MP Michel Aoun stated on Tuesday that Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea was the first to begin the wave of accusations linked to the failed attempt on his life.

He said after the Change and Reform bloc’s weekly meeting: “Geagea has jumped to conclusions over the failed assassination attempt before the investigations have reached a result.”

He added that Geagea had started jumping to conclusions when he held a press conference soon after the assassination attempt was announced.

On April 4, LF chief was the victim of a failed sniper attack at his Maarab residence.

Addressing the situation along the border, Aoun stressed the need “to arrest members of the Free Syrian Army and distinguish between them and Syrian refugees.”

“No borders can be completely controlled and it is important to arrest anyone who is caught violating them,” he added.

“It is in our best interest to arrest gunmen and members of the Free Syrian army as they pose a danger to the country,” said the FPM leader.

Arms smuggling across the Lebanese-Syrian border has been on the rise since the eruption of anti-regime protests in Syrian in March 2011.

A number of individuals have been arrested on charges of smuggling weapons and thousands of Syrian refugees have flooded northern Lebanon to escape the regime’s bloody crackdown against demonstrators.

On the appointment of top civil servants, Aoun remarked: “The government must complete these appointments.”

“Who is stopping the appointment of ambassadors?” he asked.

“President Michel Suleiman has no jurisdiction in appointing the head of the Higher Judicial Council,” he added.
