Suleiman Says Cabinet Will Not Collapse, Calls for Further Discussions on Proportional Representation

President Michel Suleiman stressed on Monday that the majority of the parliament wants the cabinet to remain for several considerations, according to As Safir newspaper.

The vote of confidence revealed that “there’s no intention by anyone to topple the cabinet,” Suleiman told the daily.

He urged the cabinet members to become more “productive.”

On Thursday, the cabinet survived a vote of confidence with 63 MPs granting it a vote of confidence at the end of a three-day Parliament session to assess its performance.

On the new electoral draft law, the president said that all efforts must be exerted to draft a new, modern electoral law.

Suleiman told As Safir that he will hold talks with all parties and especially Progressive Socialist Party MP Walid Jumblat in order to “resolve all the disputes and objections on adopting an electoral law based on proportional representation.”

Interior Minister Marwan Charbel had proposed recently an electoral law based on proportional representation to be adopted in the 2013 parliamentary polls.

The proposition had sparked controversy among the rival political parties, as Jumblat reportedly rejected the proposal while the March 8 forces have voiced their support for it.

However, the March 14-led opposition has maintained its commitment to the amended 1960 law that was adopted during the 2009 parliamentary elections.
