A vote of confidence against Premier Najib Miqati’s government is “out of the question,” Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat said Tuesday.
“We don’t have anything to do with it,” Jumblat, who is a centrist, told As Safir daily about threats by several March 14 opposition lawmakers that they would seek a vote of confidence against the government and mainly Energy Minister Jebran Bassil and Telecommunications Minister Nicolas Sehnaoui.
Al-Akhbar daily quoted sources close to Jumblat as saying that members of his National Struggle Front would vote in favor of any minister who might be subjected to a confidence vote during a three-day parliamentary session aimed at assessing the cabinet’s performance.
Parliamentary majority sources also told Ad-Diyar newspaper that the opposition would not resort to a vote of confidence given that Jumblat’s MPs would vote in favor of any minister who is subjected to grilling.
Jumblat has repeatedly announced his support for the government, becoming a stumbling block for the March 14 efforts to bring Miqati’s cabinet down.
