Report: 9-Member Team Executed Geagea’s Attempted Murder

Lebanese security experts, who have scoured the forest in the vicinity of Lebanese Forces chief Samir Geagea’s residence in Maarab, have uncovered that a nine-member assassination team divided into three groups was involved in the killing attempt, media reports said Friday.

Al-Liwaa daily reported that two of the three groups were in charge of firing on Geagea as he was walking on Wednesday in the garden of his fortified house, northeast of Beirut.

The LF chief said Thursday that the perpetrators had come from the west, not from the south or the north. But his bodyguards were unable to see them due to the thick trees.

Lebanese security experts inspected the bullet holes on the wall of the house and sent the empty shells to the forensic crime lab to uncover the type of rifle or rifles used in the assassination attempt, investigation sources told An Nahar.

They described the perpetrators as “very professional,” saying they monitored Geagea’s activities through sophisticated binoculars for a long period of time.

The sources said that the snipers most probably left the area from which they opened fire at the LF chief within five minutes of the operation through the help of other members of the assassination team.

An Nahar said that the March 14 general-secretariat, which has condemned the killing attempt, has started contacts to hold a large-scale meeting for opposition forces in Maarab next week.
