Foreign Minister Adnan Mansour announced that Lebanon must help Syria end its crisis because it is a “sister state” with which “we share special and historic ties that cannot be abandoned,” reported As Safir newspaper on Saturday.
He told the newspaper: “Lebanon will not recognize the Syrian National Council.”
He explained that he would refrain from participating in a conference that would also see the participation of the Council because taking part in the meeting would mean that Lebanon recognizes the opposition.
“We should help Syria end its crisis and not help others against it,” he stressed.
“Everyone must know that this is Lebanon’s position,” added Mansour.
The Lebanese government has chosen to distance itself from the developments in Syria, with the minister saying that the countries’ special ties force Lebanon to take a stand that would not harm its neighbor.
