Bulgaria on Saturday urged all its nationals to "immediately" leave Syria due to the worsening security situation in the violence-wracked country after a year of unrest.
"The foreign ministry calls on all Bulgarian citizens in Syria to immediately leave the country," the foreign ministry said.
"The situation in the Arab country is continuing to worsen with shootings and explosions in the capital Damascus," the statement added.
It also gave the contacts of the Bulgarian embassy in the capital, which the ministry insisted would remain open as long as the security situation allowed helping people who wanted to leave.
Bulgaria's parliament pushed in a declaration Friday for stronger sanctions against the regime of Syrian strongman President Bashar Assad, whose crackdown on dissent had claimed more than 8,000 lives according to U.N. estimates since the uprising erupted a year ago.
About 100 Syrians living in Bulgaria meanwhile gathered outside the country's embassy in Sofia on Saturday, waving portraits of Assad and shouting slogans in his support, an Agence France Presse photographer said.
The Arab community in Bulgaria was to hold an anti-Assad protest Sunday.
