Is there a Berri-backed US-Turkey proposal concerning Lebanon?

There is “no U.S.-Turkey proposal concerning Lebanon,” nor are there “any U.S.-backed proposals to change the structure of Lebanese politics established by the Taif Accords,” U.S. State Department Spokesman Tommy Pigott has said, in response to a media report in this regard.

“The United States remains fully committed to working with Lebanon and Israel on the Trilateral Framework to end the cycle of conflict once and for all by implementing its key pillars:

-Disarming Hizballah, a terrorist proxy of Iran

-Achieving long-term security for Israel and Lebanon

-Establishing peaceful neighborly relations between both countries, with mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said Pigott in a post on X.

“We welcome support from international partners in achieving those goals,” he added.

Pigott was responding to an X post by veteran journalist and war correspondent Elijah J. Magnier, who claimed that Iran has rejected “a plan to disarm Hezbollah proposed by Speaker Nabih Berri, as suggested by Turkey and the U.S. administration.”

“The communication between Hezbollah and Berri is not optimal when Berri sent a delegation to meet with the Iranian speaker (Mohammad Bagher) Qalibaf without Hezbollah's knowledge. The Turkish-U.S. proposal consisted of sharing power equally between the Christian, Shia and Sunni, the head of the army to be a Shia and the delivery of all heavy weapons to Iran,” Magnier wrote in English.
