Aoun says Lebanon cannot abandon negotiations with Israel

Lebanon “cannot abandon the negotiation track, even if current circumstances do not allow for expectations of a major shift in Israel's stance,” a visitor to the Presidential Palace quoted President Joseph Aoun as saying, in remarks published Friday by al-Akhbar newspaper.

“We all know that we will have to wait for the post-election phase in both Israel and the United States, especially since all American officials are focusing their efforts on internal election matters and the file of the war with Iran. No pressure from the U.S. administration on Israel is expected at this stage,” Aoun reportedly added.

He also noted that “he most important thing for Lebanon today is to prevent Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from resorting to a military escalation in Lebanon to serve his electoral agenda.”
