Former Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblat expressed deep distrust of United States foreign policy, accusing Washington of absolute bias toward Israel.
"When it comes to Israel, the U.S. is nothing but a proxy mediator relaying Israeli ideas," Jumblat told pan-Arab news channel al-Jazeera.
"We need international forces and a strong Lebanese army to prevent any new Israeli invasion... We are facing a new map around Israel, and none of us knows its true borders."
Jumblat accused some Lebanese of failing to consider the south an integral part of the country. He maintained that peace with Israel is impossible due to what he described as boundless expansionist aims, pointing to Israel's enforcement of a "yellow line" buffer zone in southern Lebanon.
The former MP emphasized that he favors maintaining a strict truce rather than pursuing "peace just for the sake of peace" with an entity intent on occupying Lebanese territory and "tearing its social fabric apart".
With regional tensions escalating, Jumblat believes that shielding the country entirely from the regional conflict is no longer possible. "Neutralizing Lebanon at this current moment is difficult," he said. "We must set our core principles, adapt to them, and remain steadfast."
