UN peacekeeper killed by artillery fire in south Lebanon

The U.N. force in Lebanon said Monday that one of their peacekeepers was killed when a projectile hit one of their positions, where Israeli forces are fighting Hezbollah.

Indonesia confirmed on Monday that one of its peacekeepers was killed in Lebanon.

"The Government of the Republic of Indonesia expresses its deepest condolences following the death of one Indonesian peacekeeper and the injury of three others serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), after indirect artillery fire in the vicinity of the Indonesian UNIFIL contingent’s position near Adshit Al Qusayr on 29 March 2026," Indonesia’s foreign ministry posted on social media.

Later on Monday, several other Indonesian peacekeepers were wounded in a new "incident" near the Lebanese-Israeli border.

"There has been an incident involving peacekeepers near Bani Hayyan, and we have injuries," spokesperson Kandice Ardiel told AFP.

Media reports said a patrol on the Tallousa - Bani Hayyan road was targeted Monday.

"No one should ever lose their life serving the cause of peace," UNIFIL said in a statement, adding that the origin of the projectile is not know and that an investigation will be launched to determine all of the circumstances.

The statement called on all actors to uphold their obligations under international law and to ensure the safety and security of U.N. personnel and property at all times, including by refraining from actions that may put peacekeepers in danger. "Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers are grave violations of international humanitarian law and of Security Council Resolution 1701, and may amount to war crimes.

"Too many lives have been lost on both sides of the Blue Line in this conflict. There is no military solution. The violence must end."
